Cary Collection

The Cary Collection is an achieve collection on RIT’s campus. The archive is housed in the library on the second floor. The focus of the archive is book arts and is a great resource for looking at print. The curators at the Cary Collection want to increase awareness to the collection, while maintaining order to the space. One of the curators, Amelia, also wants to spread information on type. She has a quick lesson on type families she uses when talking to visitors. This project looks to create a space outside of the collection. The space will not only bring more awareness to the collection, but also can be used as a teaching tool about type families.

The space now occupied by the RIT Press will be the environment for this interactive experience. A table will wrap around the inside with embedded touch screens flush on the tabletop. Above each interface is a projection of what is currently displayed on the table. This makes the experience more accessible to more than one person at a time.

The touch screens will explain type family history, show type examples from the collection as well as modern examples, and will highlight type family traits. Below is a prototype example of the Modern Roman interface.

There are six different families that will be covered on six different touch screens around the room. Each family has its own interaction to promote movement throughout the room.
